Don Urges ASUU To Suspend Strike
Prof. Isaac Obasi of the Department of Public Administration, University of Abuja has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to consider the Federal Government’s offer and end its on-going nationwide strike.
Obasi made the appeal in a document made available to newsmen in Abuja last Thursday.
He said for the fact that the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu acknowledged the government’s failure to fulfill its part of the agreement with ASUU was a sign to a quick resolution of the strike.
“ For the first time in history, a serving Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu openly declared very frankly that the Federal Government did not fulfill its part of the bargain with ASUU.
“This sincere and open confession of failure uncharacteristic of past Ministers on that seat opens to me a new window to a quick resolution of this on-going ASUU strike.
“More importantly, this is a spirit that allows for constructive engagement necessary for reaching a consensus in any collective bargaining engagement.
“Again, this cooperative spirit de-escalates rather than escalates the conflict. It is a spirit that facilitates mutual trust and compromise on the bargaining table.
“Furthermore, this is the spirit that enables negotiation to proceed in good faith,’’ Obasi noted.
He described the national strikes of 1980, 1981 and 1988, as a bad record for both “our public labour relations’ managers as well as to our academics.’’
Obasi said something had been fundamentally wrong with strategies on both sides to drastically reduce the number of strikes in the past 37 years.
“I am interested in an implementable agreement under a peaceful atmosphere ‘because I am involved’ in two ways both as a researcher on the issue as well as a potential beneficiary.
“Historically speaking, the strike statistics of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are usually frightening in both strike frequency and its duration.
“The duration of ASUU strikes appears to impact more negatively on the reputational status of our otherwise highly respected ASUU members than even the incessant nature of the strike,’’ he noted.
Obasi said that in terms of frequency; starting from the first ASUU strike of 1980, “we can count a total number of 16 national strikes, excluding warning strikes of shorter durations.’’
He said that in terms of ‘’ duration, the picture is more scaring to members of the public, and more damaging to academics in reputational terms’’.
Obasi said a window to resolve the current strike was already open as all the necessary government representatives such as the Ministers of Finance, Labour and Employment and Education, were involved.
He expressed the hope that the strike would be one of the shortest in ASUU’s history but noted that the duration would depend on how the union’s local chapters would vote on the government’s proposals.
Obasi appealed that all parties should work toward a quick resolution of the crisis.
On August 14, ASUU commenced an indefinite strike due to the federal government’s failure to fulfil the 2009 agreement made with it.
After Mayweather, McGregor seeks next high-risk move
Floyd Mayweather Jr always had a knack for fighting opponents at the most advantageous time.
In recent years, he faced a past-his-prime Manny Pacquiao and defeated an inexperienced, 23-year-old Canelo Alvarez.
It preserved Mayweather’s perfect record and built an allure of greatness, making him the biggest pay-per-view seller in boxing history.
Meanwhile, Mayweather gained a justified reputation for boring fights and well-calculated career moves.
McGregor & Mayweather
After a two-year hiatus at 49-0, Mayweather, now 40, sought his 50th fight against mixed martial arts champion Conor McGregor, who had never before boxed professionally. The bout announcement was widely panned as a money grab and easy victory to cap Mayweather’s career.
A counter fighter and defensive genius, Mayweather uncharacteristically marched down McGregor starting late in the third round, building exhausting pressure that eventually took its toll.
Unlike most of Mayweather’s fights in the last decade, the match proved to be full of action and swings in momentum before McGregor finally succumbed to a technical knockout in the 10th round.
“I feel like I owed my fans a last hurrah,” Mayweather said in the post-fight press conference.
“I wanted to go out with a bang. I told you guys it’d be blood, sweat and tears.”
He even described the fight as an attempt to make amends for the 2015 Pacquiao bout, which drew a record 4.6 million pay-per-view sales but a storm of criticism for Mayweather’s tedious, unanimous decision victory.
In comparison, the loud, fast-talking McGregor voiced no regret after suffering the first stoppage due to strikes of his career, which has seen him capture two titles in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), MMA’s biggest organization.
Appearing at the press conference in a paisley suit and sunglasses, whiskey glass in hand, McGregor was vague about his next career move, except to promise something big.
Saturday’s fight was already the most lucrative ever, Mayweather claimed afterwards, implying revenues from tickets and pay-per-view topping 500 million dollars.
Mayweather insisted he was now retired for good.
“After 21 years in the sport of boxing, I have some great fights, I have some boring fights, but at the end of the day I will be always remembered as a winner,” he said.
McGregor said that his own share of the receipts would likely be 100 million dollars.
Asked to compare MMA with boxing, he laughed maniacally and declared: “The check is not bad.”
The Irishman declared his intention to resume MMA-oriented training in jiu-jitsu, wrestling and kick-boxing: “And we’ll see what happens.”
He described himself as a “free agent,” though he remains under contract to the UFC, which will therefore collected a piece of McGregor’s share.
“I love competing,” he said. “I love a good fight, and tonight was a damn good fight.”
Just five years ago, while still fighting on the European MMA circuit, McGregor made ends meet for full-time fight training in Dublin only by going on the dole.
He burst into the UFC in April 2013, and through sheer will and bombast – and a rabid following of travelling Irish – quickly became the highest-paid fighter in MMA.
UFC President Dana White said in the post-fight press conference that McGregor had gone “10 rounds tonight with arguably the greatest to ever do it.”
He called McGregor “a rare, special individual. … He’s willing to put everything on the line. The greats always risk, and Conor McGregor is that guy.”
On Saturday night, McGregor gleefully rehashed the story of the making of the Mayweather fight, which sceptics first said was impossible.
“Then it was: We’re not gonna lay a glove [on Mayweather]. I’m just relishing it,” he said. “I have many options.”N Jr

Conor McGregor Reacts to His Loss Against Mayweather
Mayweather vs. McGregor lived up to the hype as both fighters pushed hard through ten rounds of boxing before Floyd Mayweather managed to overwhelm Conor McGregor and force the ref to stop the fight.
It was a humble Floyd Mayweather that spoke on the mic after the fight, congratulating Conor McGregor for being a game opponent but revealing it was always his plan to build up the offense over the fight.
For McGregor’s part, he sounded pleased with his performance but disappointed with the referee stepping in and stopping things.
“I thought I took the early rounds pretty handy, he had to change his style and fair play to him, he did,” McGregor said in the ring immediately after the fight.
“He adjusted, he changed his style, he put his hands up more. He’s composed. He’s not that fast, he’s not that powerful, but boy is he composed in there. So he was making me throw and he was patient with his shots.”
PSG sign Mbappe, Fabinho in stunning record-breaking deal
Paris Saint-Germain have concluded an agreement with AS Monaco to sign Kylian Mbappe and Fabinho from the Ligue 1 champions.
The joint move, which The Daily Record first reported in early August, will push the Qatar-owned club’s outlay on transfer fees alone to well over €400million in the current window.
According to sources familiar with the negotiations, Mbappe’s ultimate transfer-fee cost to PSG will exceed the world-record €222m sum required to activate Neymar’s release clause at Barcelona. A percentage of Mbappe’s fee will be contingent on performance-related variables.
PSG’s acquisition of Mbappe means that a club whose goal is to win a first Champions League this season has inflicted direct damage on both Real Madrid and Barcelona in this summer’s transfer market – as well as preventing Manchester City from signing Mbappe.
Earlier this month, the teenage France international agreed personal terms at the Santiago Bernabeu that would have multiplied his after-tax earnings by more than a factor of 10; with Madrid in the process of finalising a transfer fee with Monaco.
PSG improved the financial terms on offer to both Mbappe, who is expected to be remunerated with a basic after-tax salary of around €9m, and father Wilfried, who represented his son in the negotiations.
Mbappe has played just one full campaign of senior professional football, delivering 26 goals from 44 appearances as Monaco took the Ligue 1 title away from PSG and reached the semi-final of the Champions League, a competition in which the striker scored six times.
The highest profile of a list of extremely talented youngsters recruited for Monaco by former technical director Luis Campos, Mbappe cost the principality club €3m and was on a weekly wage of €34,600.
His sale to PSG ensures that Monaco will have raised more money from transfer fees in a single window than any club ever, with Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy and Tiemoue Bakayoko all sold to English Premier League clubs in the most prominent of the French champions’ earlier sales.
Why I Left School – Popular Nigerian Rapper Olamide Reveals
Popular Nigerian hip-hop artiste, Olamide Adedeji, popularly known as Badoo, has revealed that he dropped out of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu-Ode due to his father’s inability to fund his tertiary education.
Olamide stated that contrary to speculations, he did not drop out of school because of poor academic performance, but because his father could not pay his school fees.
He disclosed this in his comment as a motivational speaker at the second edition of a Summer Camp organised by Ogun State Government for Secondary school students in the state.

Olamide told the students that despite being a dropout, he was focused and determined to achieve greatness and urged the students to remain focused and disciplined, if they are to achieve their ambition in life.
He also advised them to always put God first in whatever they are doing, adding: “I want to tell you that you must always put God first in everything you are doing. Be focused and there is nothing you cannot achieve, if you are discipline.”
The artiste, who is an indigene of the state, advised the students to imbibe the spirit of “I can and I will” and also believe in themselves, noting that achieving one’s ambition in life goes beyond talent and skills “but total concentration and discipline.”
He explained that the reason why he always infused Yoruba dialects in his songs was to promote Yoruba culture, saying: “I can never do without putting Yoruba lyrics in my songs, I belong here (Nigeria). It is a blessing to be a citizen of Nigeria.”
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Dayo Adeneye, who addressed the students, assured that the state government would continue to give education the necessary attention to improve its standard.
He disclosed that the government invited Olamide to tell his success story to the students, “so that they can learn from it.”
Adeneye expressed the hope that Olamide’s speech would also help them to prepare for the future.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will on Friday hold a National Executive Council meeting to determine the direction of the ongoing national strike, PREMIUM TIMES can report.
The meeting will be holdingafter national branches equally held meetings on Wednesday to decide on whether the strike should continue or not.
All branch chairmen are expected to be in Abuja on Thursday while the meeting is tentatively expected to end on Saturday after which a decision will be communicated to Nigerians.
When contacted on the planned meeting, the ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi, said he would only speak after the meeting had been held.
“We cannot react now but after the NEC meeting we will speak on the developments,” he told PREMIUM TIMES on phone.
Several branch chairmen and officials spoken to declined to provide information on the decision of their branches on the strike, saying they had been asked not to speak to journalists.
“We held special congresses today. I cannot divulge outcome of the meeting but we held a meeting on the strike action,” Tomi Damson, secretary of Lagos State University branch of ASUU said.
The chairman of another branch of the union in a southern university also spoke on the interim report received from the branches.
“From the Southern part of the country and some parts of the North, universities voted for continuation of the strike; but we cannot tell now until after the meeting of NEC,” the don said.
The union went on strike on August 13 to protest against poor welfare and poor funding of universities, a move that led to the Federal Government inviting the body for negotiations. ASUU then sent the details of the negotiation to its branches for further deliberation.
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu had expressed hope that the strike would be suspended this week.
In a related development, the Ibadan zone of the union has condemned the “continued victimisation of lecturers in University of Ilorin.”
The zonal coordinator, Ade Adejumo, who said this in a press statement alleged that the Vice Chancellor of the university, Ganiyu Ambali, was victimising ASUU members in the university, a situation he said could lead to further prolonging the ongoing national strike.
Attempts to reach Mr. Ambali proved abortive as he did not answer phone calls or reply messages sent to him
NBC: We did not ban Olamide, 9ice, Davido’s songs… that is not our job
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has said it did not issue a statement banning the songs of Olamide, Davido and 9ice from being broadcast.
The NBC said it is not in the business of banning songs, saying by virtue of the broadcasting law, radio and television stations are to ensure that songs containing vulgar or suggestive lyrics and visuals are not aired.
Idachaba Armstrong, director of broadcast monitoring, told TheCable that a ban notice of ‘Wo’ and ‘Wavy Level’ by Olamide, ‘Fall’ by Davido and ‘Living Things’ by 9ice did not emanate from the NBC.
The ban notice, which was issued by the National Broadcasting Corporation, had been circulating on social media for the past couple of days.
Reacting, Armstrong said: “First of all, NBC is a commission, not a corporation.
“Nobody at NBC issued a statement to the effect. We can’t be issuing a statement on every album released in his country. The broadcaster has the responsibility to do the needful.
“NBC does not ban songs, we don’t have any business with the artistes. It is left for NBC to tell stations to ensure the songs and videos are fit for broadcast before putting them on air.”
Armstrong emphasised the need for broadcast stations to do “gate-keeping” so as to determine the songs that are unsuitable for broadcast.
“The whole idea of offensive vulgar lyrics. It is the responsibility of broadcasters to ensure they don’t come on air,” he said.
“They are supposed to do what is called gate-keeping and they should have editorial control over their content but broadcasters now carelessly air songs without exercising that editorial discretion.
“They abdicate that responsibility and then expect us to start chasing them.”
‘The songs are actually offensive’
The director of broadcast monitoring, however, said he has ascertained that the songs in question are “actually offensive”.
He said: “I have reliably gathered that some of those songs are actually offensive, regarding the lyrics. Some of these songs are for clubs.
“These stations that should practice self-regulation are lazy and unprofessional in their conduct.”
Armstrong said broadcast stations are aware that any lyrics or song containing offensive content cannot be put on the air, adding that any station found wanting will be sanctioned.
“We will impose the necessary sanctions on the stations. If the stations contravene any of the broadcast code, they will be fined,” he said.
Explaining how the process of sanctioning a broadcast station works, he said: “Once NBC picks it up, we call the stations to order and impose the necessary fine. First, we caution you, then impose a fine afterward, which can be between N50-N100k. But if they are recalcitrant, it can rise to N500k.”
Since the news of the purported ban hit the internet, fans and several entertainers have heavily criticised the commission.
Health ministry’s grouse with Olamide
Fans of the artistes have also mixed up the alleged ban with the ministry of health’s notification that Olamide’s video for his hit song ‘Wo’ contains “dangerous public health content”.
The ministry had on Sunday notified the public via Twitter that some of the scenes in the rapper’s video violated the 2015 tobacco act.
“The content & video contains scenes that violate the ban on Tobacco Advertising, Promotion & Sponsorship provision of the act #ClearTheAir,” one of the tweets had read.
According to the 2015 tobacco control act, the advertising, promotion or sponsorship of tobacco or tobacco products “shall attract a fine of not less than N3,000,000 and a term of imprisonment of not more than one year”.
The rapper on Tuesday took to Twitter to state that he did not intend to promote tobaccoin his video.

2017 Admission - JAMB Releases Cut-Off Marks Today
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board,JAMB,is expected to release cut-off points for this year's admission into universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and monotechnics today.
The release of the country's tertiary institutions' admission benchmark would be a fallout of a policy committee meeting the board is holding with all stakeholders in the education sector on the said day.
The policy committee meeting which is holding in Abuja, would be attended by vice- chancellors, reactors and provosts of public universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and monotechnics.
The release of the cut-off marks would end the anxiety that has since enveloped candidates who sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination,UTME, in preparation for admission this year.
Similarly, the release of the marks signals the express permission to the eligible tertiary institutions to begin the year's admission of would-be students.
Ahead of the admission, JAMB had warned institutions against shortchanging candidates whose performances merit admission, saying it would not condone such act.
"The board will ensure that criterion set by Senate are strictly adhered to by the institutions' admission officers and no shifting of goal post in the middle of the admission exercise,"JAMB had warned in a recent statement signed by its Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin.
The statement said its warning was to "guarantee fairness and equity to all candidates."
"The board has sent to all institutions a soft copy of printout of candidates who choose them.
" This year, the board has sent candidates who scored 100 and above in their JAMB to the institutions in its flexible admission policy for institutions to determine the suitability of the candidates in compliance with all laid down rules and regulations as determined by the proprietors of the institutions and approved by Senate of the various schools, "the statement had said.
Trump lashes out at 'fake news' when pressed about failure to hold news conference
Trump lashes out at 'fake news' when pressed about failure to hold news conference
President Donald Trump tried to breeze past the fact that he failed to hold a news conference — as promised — on Monday, instead lashing out at a CNN reporter as "fake news."
Trump on Friday had pledged that he would hold a “pretty big” news conference when he returned to Washington, D.C., on Monday to call for an investigation into China's intellectual property practices. Instead, he delivered a statement from the White House condemning the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend, taking no questions in the process.
Story Continued Below
At a second event, during which Trump signed a memorandum launching the trade investigation, the president also held no formal news conference and grew testy when CNN’s Jim Acosta asked why he hadn’t condemned hate groups by name over the weekend.
“They’ve been condemned. They have been condemned,” Trump said.
Acosta followed up by asking Trump why there was no press conference on Monday, as he had indicated last week. “We had a press conference,” Trump insisted. “We just had a press conference.”
Acosta asked whether the press corps could ask him more questions, and Trump replied that it wouldn’t bother him “at all.”
“But, you know, I like real news, not fake news,” Trump told Acosta as the president pointed toward the CNN reporter. “You’re fake news.”
SO SAD! NBC Bans Olamide's Wo & Wavy Level, Davido's IF & Fall And 9ice's Living Things (See Reasons & Full List)
The Federal Government via the National Broadcasting Corporation, has made firm on its decision to ban Olamide’s anthem and hit track of the moment, Wo.
This is coming a few days after the Federal Ministry of Health had openly aired it displeasure regarding visuals to Wo (Read HERE). In its own opinion, the video portrays a bad message that encourages second-hand smoking.
However, NBC did not stop there as they also went further to ban four other hit tunes, Wavy Level by YBNL boss Olamide; FALL and IF by DMW boss, Davido and also Living Things by 9ice.
You would recall that Falz had earlier called out music acts who entertain lavish lifestyles and also fraud. In view of Falz comment, 9ice’s “Living Things”, was the major talking point.
Apparently, we would not be hearing these hit tunes on our air waves again.

Many Businessmen, who spoke on Monday, described the President’s speech as “empty”, stating that Buhari’s refusal to address the issue of the economy in his speech, is a bad signal that the economy may return to its despicable state.
Recall, that the financial market operators and investors, both local and international, were waiting anxiously to take dramatic investment decisions, based on Buhari’s speech direction.
The wait was based on an assessment by Financial Experts, that the socio-political economy of the country has recorded significant progress in Buhari’s absence, which stands to be validated or reversed by his speech and subsequent decisions.
The foreign exchange market has witnessed changes that brought about the relative stability of the naira, and businesses are gradually rebounding with improved numbers, as reforms picked up before Buhari’s arrival.
At the weekend, the financial market that had long been in high gear, saw the Interbank’s overnight lending rate falling to an average of 12 percent, from 60 percent a week ago.
This was a result of the repayment of matured treasury bills, and a refund of excess cash deposited by banks to buy dollars, by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.
CBN had sold $100 million at its special intervention auction in the foreign exchange market earlier in the week, less than the amount demanded by banks, leading to a refund of the excess deposits.
Consequently, the parallel market rate remained at N366 per dollar, while the interbank official rate remains below N306 per dollar, and the investors and exporters’ window priced the naira at N367 per dollar.
Also, the All-Share Index of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, rose by 1.66 percent at 36,920 points, after bargain hunters returned to take positions in the financial sector stocks.
Frontline economist, Bismarck Rewane, said everything was pegged on his broadcast today, which would be highly priced, as long as it is in a positive direction.
“Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, has done a great job so far, Buhari only needs to sustain it, perhaps building more on it. By his speech today, we would need to get a new sense of direction in plugging leakages.
“The market is ready to respond, and it will be positive as long as the content of the speech is positive too. So, let the activities begin”, Rewane said.
The Managing Director of Afrinvest Securities Limited, Ayodeji Eboh, said the market was anxious to know the content of the broadcast, as investment decisions are always responsive to information and its meanings.
Jose Mourinho Responds To Thierry Henry Claims?
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has seemingly responded to recent claims made by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.
After United's 4-0 win over West Ham United in the opening week of the 2017/18 Premier League campaign, Henry tipped the Red Devils to be favourites for the title.
Mourinho kept their form going with another 4-0 win this past weekend, this time over Swansea City, but the Portuguese manager has refused to entertain any "frontrunners for the title" talk, seemingly in response to what Henry recently said.
"I'm too experienced and stable to lose my discipline, my stability and to think a 4-0 really makes us the best team in the country, makes us the favourites or makes us the dream team," he said, according to Manchester Evening News.
"We're not favourites, we're not the dream team, we're just a team with more confidence than last season, with more time of work together, with more happiness probably and more relaxed on the pitch with the way we play matches, but I'm calm."
Eric Bailly, Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial got on the scoresheet on Saturday to continue United's perfect start to the season.

Man City, Everton honour Barcelona victims
Manchester City and Everton paid tribute to the victims of the Manchester and Barcelona terror attacks in their Premier League meeting at the Etihad Stadium on Monday.
Both teams’ shirts carried an image of a worker bee, which became a symbol of solidarity after the deadly terror attack on Manchester in May, modified to include the red and yellow colours of Catalonia.
The legend “MCRBCN” — standing for Manchester and Barcelona — was stamped beneath the symbols, while both teams wore black armbands.
“The people of this great city continue to demonstrate an unbelievable sense of community spirit through their ongoing efforts to raise funds following the tragic events at Manchester Arena,” said City chief executive Ferran Soriano, who previously worked for FC Barcelona.
“In what will be Manchester City’s first home fixture since the attack, it is fitting that our players will wear the worker bee on their shirts, together with black armbands, as our club and fans come together to show solidarity with fellow Mancunians, and unity with all of those affected in Catalonia following Thursday’s devastating events.”
Both City manager Pep Guardiola and his Everton counterpart Ronald Koeman played for Barcelona, with Guardiola, a Catalonia native, going on to become the most successful manager in the club’s history.
Twin vehicle attacks last Thursday killed 15 people and wounded around 120 in Barcelona’s bustling Las Ramblas boulevard and the nearby seaside resort of Cambrils.
A suicide bombing after a concert in Manchester by US pop star Ariana Grande in May left 22 people dead.
